Cultural heritage partnership celebrated at Carmichael mine
The Clermont and Belyando (CAB) Burra Trust has welcomed the release of a cultural heritage induction video to explain the detailed ways Bravus Mining and Resources works alongside Traditional Owners to respect cultural heritage at the Carmichael mine near Clermont in central Queensland.
The video explains the focus on trust, respect and mutual benefit which has been the hallmark of Bravus’ relationship with Traditional Owners during the planning, construction and operations of the mine.
Wangan and Jagalingou Elder Patrick Malone said the video was designed to share with contractors and employees the significance of the site to Traditional Owners and to explain how the Carmichael project operates while safeguarding cultural heritage.
“We value the mutual respect in our relationship with Bravus at the Carmichael mine,” Mr Malone said.
“My priority is to make sure we preserve our culture and look after our land and I’m proud to work with Bravus to deliver this.
“We have been on country to teach about significant locations and to share our connection to the land.
“I’m glad we’ve been able to bring young people with us to pass on our knowledge.
“That way our culture can keep thriving and will be shared across generations.
“The Carmichael project also provides economic benefits for our people through jobs and opportunities for Indigenous businesses.”
Bravus Mining and Resources Chief Operating Officer Mick Crowe said the video showcased the ways the mine operates in consultation with Traditional Owners.
“We work to a Cultural Heritage Management Plan which was developed with the Wangan and Jagalingou people to ensure all work on the project respects sacred sites, artefacts and cultural heritage,” Mr Crowe said.
“No land is disturbed on the Carmichael project unless it complies with the Cultural Heritage Management Plan.
“The land has been meticulously assessed through a Cultural Heritage Survey, drawing on the expertise of an archaeologist and the cultural insight of the Traditional Owners.
“The Plan also sets out exactly what should occur to make sure there is Traditional Owner input when significant areas are uncovered.
“We have worked in partnership with Traditional Owners through all stages of the mine’s development and operations to respect cultural values and ensure Indigenous Australians share in the economic benefits.”
